No. I.-Notes on the GAMBIA. 1783-1908. Authentic records show that a fOItified post was established at

Fort James in the latter half of the seventeenth century. On the 3rd September, 1783, a Treaty was concluded at Versailles

between Great Britain and France, by Article X of which the King of the French guaranteed to the King of Great Britain the possession of Fort J alnes (Albreda) and of the River Gambia. (See GREAT BRITAIN AND FRANCE, p. 713.)

In 1806, the Island of St. Mary, at the mouth of the Gambia, 011 which is situated the town of Bathurst, was purchased by the British Government.
