ABSTRACT

Most of the content of the previous chapters has focused on the appraisal of performance, albeit with an eye to motivating and developing individuals over the review period. Traditionally, however, appraisal has a longer-term perspective in contributing to the assessment and development of potential. In recent years, with the ‘war for talent’ (Michaels et al., 2001), this has been given greater attention and prominence, and that is reflected in the more lengthy treatment of the subject here than might traditionally be associated with a book on appraisal.
