ABSTRACT

Although numerous changes in appraisal have been charted and described elsewhere in this book – principally, the rise of 360-degree feedback and the increasing application of appraisal to professional groups – there is another development that has not yet been fully considered (only briefly mentioned in Chapter 7) but which will be addressed here. This is the impact of culture in the context of appraisal. With increasing freedom of movement of labour within the EU, and the growing internationalisation of business, the question arises as to the applicability of management concepts and approaches developed in one culture to people coming from another, different one. How well do our ideas on how to structure and carry out performance appraisal travel?
