It is often felt that babies who are younger than twelve months old simply put things in their mouths when they play with objects. It is true that most babies, when picking up objects for the first time, do put them in their mouths. They are ‘testing them out’ through smell and taste, which are the most powerful senses for a young baby. As you observe babies more closely, you will see that they soon begin to look at objects much more closely, shake them, drop them and bang them against other objects.
