In Chapter 1, I presented a historical overview of Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories about how children learn and develop with a particular focus on problemsolving and numeracy skills. It is important to understand their complementary theoretical standpoints to be able to make sense of the EYFS because the framework and practice guidance draw upon a blend of both their views.
