ABSTRACT

OneSundayafternooninApril1987,representativesoftwenty-six congregationsthathaddeclaredthemselvessanctuariesforCentral AmericanrefugeesgatheredinaProtestantchurchinBerkeley,California,fortheirmonthlysteeringcommitteemeeting.1Amongtheagenda itemswasanannouncementaboutanupcomingevent:a"Journeyto CentralAmerica."InsteadofitsregularbusinessmeetinginMay,the NorthernCaliforniaSanctuaryCovenant-agroupofeightysanctuary congregations,towhichthetwenty-sixthatweremeetinginBerkeley belonged-wouldhold"asmorgasboardofevents"designedtorenew participants'enthusiasmforsanctuarywork.Accordingtoaflyerthat wasdistributedtorepresentatives,theJourneywouldhave"something foreveryone!...Newpeoplemayheartheirfirsttestimonies,andask thosefirstdifficultquestions.Experiencedworkersmayberefreshedin aworkshoponChristianbasecommunities,orgetthelatestinformationonHumanRightsviolations."Thejourneytookplace,and,at theJunesteeringcommitteemeeting,alocalministerdeclaredthat ithadbeenasuccess.TherehadbeendeliciousSalvadoranfood, informativeupdatesonthesituationinCentralAmerica,and"some peoplethereheardtheirfirsttestimonies!"
