ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors try to convey something of the character of debate and discussion involved in shaping the terms and ideas that geographers use in grappling with the inherent complexity of the world in which we live. They seek, by example, to show that ideas are crafted by specific people; that they are formulated, contested and challenged. The authors explore the various ways that geographers have studied the subjects of regions, area studies and place. Remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) can provide much that is new and provide regional/spatial information that can be the basis of cutting-edge research. GIS has the potential to give geographers per se a skill that is specifically geographical when they are working in multidisciplinary research teams, so that they are no longer merely taking on roles from sedimentologists, economists or palynologists.
