ABSTRACT
Bangladesh celebrated the silver jubilee of its independence in 1996. Unfortunately, political independence has not had the desired effect on the development of its impoverished population. Table 17.1 gives selected development indicators for Bangladesh compared to the South Asian region, developing countries and the developed countries. It is apparent that much remains to be done to improve the condition of the people of the country.
