ABSTRACT

Some nonscientists are shocked to hear that scientists think anything is sexy at all, but feminists are not surprised by sexy science because they are acutely aware of the power in designating any entity “sexy”. This chapter aims to reveal the context in which sexy science is practiced, and to provide examples taken from one contemporary sexy science to talk about “master molecules” as primary hallmarks of sexy science. To critique sexy science puts scientists’ personal livelihoods at stake; such criticism threatens the peculiar notion that scientific truths are the most factual truths that humans can divine. Moreover, scientists are heavily invested in the production and reproduction of sexy science; maintaining their status requires not only the mystique of sexy science but also that Harvard remain among its major producers. Sexy science isn’t bad molecular biology; it is instead hypermolecular molecular biology, master molecule masturbation carried to the extreme.
