ABSTRACT
What is remembered of revolutions? Americans remember words. They celebrate their revolution on the Fourth of July and date their independence from 1776. On that day the Declaration of Independence was read before the people and acquired authority in their acclamation. Americans remember their founding as an act of revolution. They remember that revolution as an act of speech and writing, a genesis in words.
