Manuel de Falla
Pages 12

Manuel de Falla (Matheu) was a composer whose works spokeeloquently for his native Spain. At a time when Bartók inHungary, Vaughan Williams in England, and Janácˇek in Czechoslovakia were drawing heavily on native folk material in the development of their musical style, de Falla was producing scores that reflected his own folk traditions by projecting the spirit of Spanish music rather than by quoting directly identifiable folk material. His continuing search for brevity and purity of expression later induced an element of self-criticism that produced scores of great efficiency at the same time that they restricted his output to a list of compositions less extensive than many of his contemporaries.
