Francis Poulenc came from a comfortably affluent family whosehome was a center of music-making as well as a venue fre-quented by persons active in literature, the theater, and the fine arts. This background established Poulenc’s contact with a Parisian society that became the audience for most of his early works and in turn elicited from him a penchant for insouciant music presented in a straightforward manner, designed primarily to draw approval from those whose company he enjoyed.
