Most of Ravel’s productive years coincided with la belle époque, that period following Victor Hugo’s death in 1885 that sawart, music, and literature flourish in France as they had not since the days of Louis XIV. After the death of Claude Debussy in 1918, Ravel was one of the most prominent French musicians in the artistic ferment associated with the era. From about 1899 until the early 1930s, he produced a steady stream of compositions demonstrating unusual lucidity, sophistication, and polished craftsmanship.
