ABSTRACT

In the current era, the diagnosis of prostatic disorders requires a meticulous and methodical approach. Modern testing methods provide useful information that helps to distinguish benign conditions from those more likely to be malignant. Some of the tests may also provide prognostic information about the likely progression of the condition and the risk: benefit ratio of particular treatment options. It is worth bearing in mind the many risk factors for prostatic disease (see Chapter 3) when making a diagnosis and, as always, the first step is to take an accurate history.
