ABSTRACT

WHAT AND WHERE IS THE PROSTATE? The normal prostate is a walnut-sized gland that lies at the base of the bladder and surrounds the urethra. Within the gland, secretory cells release prostatic or seminal fluid, which liquefies semen after ejaculation. In benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a progressive enlargement of the gland to the size of a tangerine can occur. The resultant urethral obstruction gives rise to the symptoms of BPH, which are now often referred to as lower urinary tact symptoms (LUTS).
