ABSTRACT

According to Nielsen’s annual US gaming survey, 56% of US households own at least one current-generation gaming console (Nielsen, 2012). Console gaming is the most relevant area in the games industry nowadays—economically, console gaming has greatly surpassed traditional PC gaming, and for many games, consoles also serve as the lead platforms for development. The acceptance of gaming outside the group of traditional core gamers can be attributed to the success of easy-to-use technological platforms and more casual console systems that are promoted for use in the living room. Furthermore, console games have been especially designed to allow for playing in mixed groups on relatively equal terms; that is, young people with advanced gaming skills and seniors without any gaming experience.
