ABSTRACT

This chapter is a dialogue between: a culture, Qatar; a Qatari woman, Dana; an expatriate researching physical activity while working in Qatar, Kelly; a co-author who brought Bourdieu’s social theory to Kelly while visiting Qatar, lisahunter; and Bourdieu’s interconnected concepts of practice, field-habitus, capitals, reflexivity, and hysteresis. The chapter’s pedagogical intent is to invite you to use Bourdieu’s conceptual tools to make your own positioned reflexive analysis alongside ours (see Chapter 1). The chapter authors embody Australian and mixed-Western resource-rich cultures, valuing exercise (Kelly) and movement (lisahunter). We ask you, as a reader, what culture/s do you embody and what worldviews do you hold, and why is this important when analysing narratives from other cultures?
