ABSTRACT
I want now to highlight some significant features of the Church’s supremacy in Galileo’s time that hindered the progress of the astronomical Copernican revolution. At the same time, as we shall see, events occurred outside its direct control, such as his experiments, new geographical and archaeological discoveries and the growth of literacy that led eventually to its completion.
