ABSTRACT

We pulled into the near-empty car park backing on to the dunes at Te Henga just before 11:30am. A few other car-loads were arriving and unloading – I didn’t recognize anyone, but it was easy to tell they were here for the same reason – all women, well wrapped up, mostly in black or dark colours, some in heavy cloaks, lugging bags of firewood, jar lanterns, kits containing vacuum flasks and rugs.
