I turn, in this chapter, to a discussion of some of the relevant positions taken in the history of philosophy (including the history of Christian thought) up until the present and (at greater length) in contemporary Jewish thought, and attempt to define those positions in terms of the analytical framework developed in Chapter 1.1 The positions on DCT and SMU adopted in the history of Jewish thought – i.e. in Judaism’s classical texts – are the central focus of most of this study and are analysed in detail in subsequent chapters. In this chapter, I confine myself to contemporary Jewish scholarship.
