ABSTRACT

Notwithstanding this, let us try to tease out in more detail exactly what the differences are between infinite resignation – said to be the ‘last stage [Abraham] loses sight of’ (FT 66) – and faith. The knight of infinite resignation is probably the most fully drawn illustration of what faith is not. Nevertheless, while not being identical to faith, infinite resignation is ‘the last stage before faith’ (FT 75) and insofar as Abraham is said to make a ‘double movement’, it appears that in some way ‘infinite resignation’ is the first part of this movement. How does this work?
