Deregulation and growth in the telecommunications industry

In the 1980s and 1990s, China’s telecommunications sector like the rest of the

Chinese economy has undergone dramatic changes in terms of the regulatory

environment, infrastructure development and services. As a result, the Chinese

telecommunications industry has expanded significantly and is now the world’s

second largest in terms of telephone lines (ITU 2000).
