ABSTRACT

In comparison to the shipbuilding and aerospace industry, the building construction field in general appears somewhat archaic. While the digital technologies have revolutionized other industries, the impact in building design and production has been minimal so far. They all had information technology introduced into their respective design and production processes at about the same time, albeit to a different extent and to different ends. Obviously, while others have managed to do things differently and in better ways using digital technologies, little has changed in the building industry. We would argue that although there are significant differences between the design and production of buildings and the design and production of ships and airplanes, there are some interesting similarities that merit closer scrutiny by architects. We have quite a bit to learn by looking at what others have done, especially in the shipbuilding and aerospace industries.
