ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the equality of family life. The issue of equality has been an integrated part of both national and international politics. The goal of equality politics is to clear out factors that contribute to gender segregation and gender-based discrimination. The view is that it is vital that women have the same opportunities as men to govern and control their life conditions. Equal opportunities can be made real through such things as equal rights to education, career, equal salaries for equal work and shared responsibility for the home and children. The rules of parental leave allow for flexibility in how leave is used since parents can share days. In international comparisons of gender equality on indicators of paid work and political participation, Sweden and other countries with similar institutional arrangements display relatively higher degree of gender equality compared with countries with other models. The chapter discusses how gender equality in family life can be defines.
