ABSTRACT

The key words in history are surely, take everything with a pinch of salt. This rather overturns the rote learning of facts, because of the need to determine what is a fact. This is the job of history-to try to establish fact, in the sure knowledge that someone, somewhere will disagree. History is, indeed, argument without end. Partly because of the incompleteness of our picture of the past, we can all argue about the relative importance, reliability and partiality of the evidence.
