ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a chronic and disabling illness which affects about 1% of

the population. Although most people with diabetes cope well with

the condition, psychological problems are common. Such problems

are important not only because of the suffering they cause in their

own right but also because of their impact on the management and

eventual outcome of the diabetes itself. This chapter will focus initially

on the psychological adjustment to diabetes, and will then consider

the associated specific psychiatric conditions that can occur in relation

to the disorder.
