This was among the first papers to articulate the concept of combining ‘lumpectomy’ and moderate-dose radiotherapy and to demonstrate long-term results in selected patients.

From 1935 to 1960, 124 clinical stage I and II patients were treated with excisional biopsy and radiotherapy at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto and compared retrospectively to similar patients treated with mastectomy. The results at 5-10 years were similar for the two groups.
