ABSTRACT

A total of 818 patients with localized ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) were randomized to lumpectomy (with negative margins) or lumpectomy plus breast radiotherapy. With a median follow-up time of 90 months, radiotherapy resulted in a persistent reduction in non-invasive breast recurrences (13.4% to 8.2%) and in invasive breast recurrences (13.4% to 3.9%), with a similar benefit observed in all subsets.
