ABSTRACT
In this paper, Mina Bissell and her colleagues describe a three-dimensional in vitro culture system in which normal and cancerous mammary cells are able to proliferate and develop three-dimensional interactions with themselves and defined basement membrane components which lead to a dramatically altered program of gene expression, far more reminiscent of gene expression patterns in fresh in vivo materials as compared to long-term cell culture.
