ABSTRACT

Holistic birth preparation (HBP) draws on the tradition of dance movement therapy (DMT), psychoanalysis and yoga. This pilot study gathered feedback from women, who attended holistic birth preparation classes. Women found classes effective in helping them to respond to their bodies’ needs and in using breathing and relaxation strategies during the birth. They also valued the emotional support they gained from meeting other pregnant women. The analysis of semi-structured interviews indicated that women needed space in a small, unhurried group environment where they could prepare physically and emotionally for the birth of their babies, as well as share experiences and gather information. Bodily experiences were considered an important and effective preparation in terms of raising a woman’s determination and confidence in her ability to give birth rather than being the passive recipient of information handed to her. Dance movement therapists are in a unique position to contribute towards antenatal education in helping childbirth educators think about the most effective format in which to pass on information and help prepare women for birth.
