ABSTRACT

The Shughni, or Shughnani, ethnic group, ethnonym xuγ̌nī, xuγ̌nůnī, populates the mountain valleys of the West Pamir. Administratively, the Shughni-speaking area is part of the Mountainous Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Tajik Viloyati Mukhtori Kuhistoni Badakhshon) of the Republic of Tajikistan, with its major center of Khorog, Taj. Khorugh (37˚ 30′N, 71˚ 31′E), and of the adjacent Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan.
