ABSTRACT

More than a million people in the Northeast of India claim Tai ethnicity. However, over 99% of these are Tai Ahoms who no longer maintain Tai as a spoken language. In addition to the Ahoms, there are a number of other groups, the Aiton, Khamti, Khamyang, Nora, Phake and Turung, who also claim Tai ethnicity. Tai language is spoken, to varying extents, in all of these communities.
