ABSTRACT

Towards the end of April 1941-the month in which Dunderdale’s L’Émigrant, alias Le Petit Marcel, had been lost-Holdsworth’s Denise-Louise, which had been trying to build up cover as a commercial fishing boat working out of Newlyn, was sent on a reconnaissance of the fishing grounds west of Ushant. The thinking behind this was that ships met at sea might be used to infiltrate arms. The sortie had to be cut short because of engine trouble and was therefore inconclusive. An attempt to conduct a night reconnaissance of the same area using ML 107, in conjunction with aircraft flown from St Eval, was equally unproductive. The air search was carried out in a Hudson aircraft of 54 Squadron by Slocum’s liaison officer with RAF Coastal Command, a retired naval officer named W.B.Luard.
