ABSTRACT
This chapter comprises two parts: the first outlines what made the emergence of NRMs a new phenomenon and how this elicited a range of institutional responses and competing forms of institutional knowledge. The second part looks at the emergence of academic discourses in the sociology of religion in Britain and Religionswissenschaft in Germany.
