ABSTRACT
Although by no means an exhaustive or comprehensive list of significant members of the Bombay film industry – due to space constraints – the lists below are meant to introduce readers unfamiliar with Hindi cinema to some of the important and noteworthy directors, composers, and actors in the industry.1 The following individuals have been chosen for the popularity of their films, their power within the industry, and their impact on the style and substance of Hindi cinema. Films listed in bold indicate those that will be described in greater detail in the following chapter. Sources for this chapter include the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (Rajadhyaksha and Willemen 1999) and The Hundred Luminaries of Hindi Cinema (Raheja and Kothari 1996).
