ABSTRACT
A writing system (script, orthography) may be defined as a given set of written marks together with a particular set of conventions for their use (Sampson 1985: 19). The units of a writing system are known as graphs, and in citation (mention) of one or more graphs, angle brackets, < >, are standardly used.
