ABSTRACT
In our introduction to this book various terms have been used to highlight the differences between quantitative and qualitative methods. These terms can also be employed to provide clues that enable use to write the history of these two types of methods, a history that could shed light on present day difficulties in combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The key terms are naturalistic, holistic, contextual, interpretative, hermeneutic, reflexive vs. measurement and experiment.
