Pages 16

The girls’ movement in general occurred in four organizational forms: as girls-only groups within a male dominated league, as gender-mixed groups within a male dominated league, as girls-only leagues within a male dominated league, and fi nally as autonomous girls-only leagues. In the course of their three decades of existence the girls’ movement experienced all four forms: before the First World War largely as either gender mixed or girls-only groups within a male dominated league, during and especially after the war for about eight years largely as autonomous girls’ leagues and groups, sometimes liaised to a male league, and from 1928 onwards, during the phase of the great unifi cations, mainly as girls-only groups and leagues within male dominated leagues.
