ABSTRACT

Benjamin Weil is one of the leading international curators of new media art. Hewas one of the founders of the network ‘The Thing’ in the early 1990s and inNew York set up the Internet arts organisation, äda ’web, which was one of the first curated and organised web art projects in the world operating as a stand-alone organisation and not associated with other institutions. It produced some of the most important Internet art pieces in the 1990s, mostly through a series of commissioned works with artists ranging from famous names with established careers in the art world to unknown individuals experimenting with digital media. Subsequently, Benjamin worked at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London as the Director of the New Media Centre and at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) as the Curator of New Media; in both positions he was responsible for bringing new media arts projects into the confines of much more conventional arts institutions.
