ABSTRACT
This vivid description of the death of Henry I by Henry, Archdeacon of Huntingdon, conveys two fundamental medieval social ideas. Decay afflicts all material things and therefore ultimately only the spiritual and the eternal are important, but that nevertheless, during life, society was hierarchical, presided over by great rulers like King Henry himself.
