ABSTRACT
This chapter covers the period of socialist cinema in the People’s Republic of China. The period started on 1 October 1949, when the Chinese Communist Party founded the PRC after defeating the Nationalist troops and driving the Republic of China government to Taiwan. The period reached its end in 1978, when filmmakers were gradually recovering from the Cultural Revolution and a new CCP policy paved the way for a rapid growth of cinema in the subsequent decades.
