Times are changing. Globalization and economic restructuring are associated with profound changes in the nature of work, the spatial division of labour, the gender distribution of employment and the economic and social foundations of particular places. As new activities emerge within or are captured by particular places others go into decline, and as the new and old are rarely matched geographically some regions expand while others languish, with differing implications for the people living there.
