Globalization has increased economic and social interaction between countries but social divisions are widening and while the proportion of people living in dire poverty has fallen in recent years the absolute number has risen with the increase in world population. Currently 2.8 billion people (44 per cent) of the world’s population live on less than $2 a day, and around 1.2 billion on less than $1 a day, while the richest 1 per cent receive as much income as the poorest 57 per cent (UNDP 2002).
