ABSTRACT
The data from Table 9.1 come from the Home Office Addicts Index, which was based largely on data from all addicts, therapeutic and otherwise, who informed the Home Office of their addiction. The addicts were then were placed on a register, hence the term ‘registered addict’. The Home Office and others made no claims that these were other than a self-selected group, probably unrepresentative of addicts generally.
