ABSTRACT
The present chapter discusses the historical development of courtyard housing in Algeria, and attempts to highlight the main factors that have contributed to the geographical spread of the courtyard typology. Architects, sociologists, social anthropologists, psychologists and historians have employed many theoretical approaches for developing an understanding of the factors that have influenced the formation of courtyard architecture.
