ABSTRACT

The Native American population in 1998 numbered 2.3 million in the United States (Russell, 1998). An analysis of this group shows that they are culturally heterogeneous, geographically dispersed, and remarkably young. Thirty-nine percent of these people are under 29 years of age as compared to 29% of the total U.S. population (LaFromboise, 1993). Fewer Native Americans are high school graduates relative to the general population, and the annual income level is 62% of the U.S. average (Sue & Sue, 1999; U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1995).
