ABSTRACT

An assortment of theoretical paradigms has been generated to explain organizational change in higher education. From a constellation of theories that have their basis in environmental factors to structural variables, interpersonal dynamics, and the cultural milieu, these paradigms endeavor to understand the underlying challenges of organizational growth and adaptations. The focus of this chapter, thus, is to discuss the variety of theoretical models that have been advanced to explain university growth and structural change with particular attention to the evolution of multicampus university systems. This will be followed by a brief overview of the various patterns of multicampus university systems that are discernible in Africa. Next, the chapter provide a discussion of the methodological approaches used in this study in order to illustrate how data were collected and situated within the selected theoretical framework.
