MICHAEL RECKORD Jamaica has for hundreds of years been a nation with a passion for performing,

and there have been theatres and performing groups in the island for most of

the last three hundred of them. With the coming of Independence in 1962,

dramatic productions began to boom. Popular music grew faster, and reggae

quickly became the island’s best known Performing Arts export. Dance grew

too, but less quickly than the other performing art forms.
