ABSTRACT
In China, as elsewhere, the process of selling places rests on their commodifi cation
and their conversion into attractive products that can be advertised, sold, and
consumed in competitive markets. While cities use their unique cultural heritage
and historical resources to distinguish themselves from other cities in the hope of
attracting capital, they may also want to express compliance with world established
norms of modernity, especially with regard to their business climate and facilities.
