ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the search for constraints on Deviation II. This is the deviation that involves 'sensitivity' on the part of one morphosyntactic property either to other properties realised in the same word-form (where the allomorphy is 'grammatically conditioned') or else to the stem of the word itself (where the allomorphy is 'lexically conditioned'). The first part of the chapter proposes a generalisation concerning the direction in which such conditioning can operate; the second part discusses the relationship between this generalisation and certain other recent proposals relevant to Deviation II.
